How do you listen to the audio while its recording in real time? I've done it before but now I can't figure it out.

i have a problem,1 day i wanted to record on sony vegas and i had my mycrophone connected and stuff but it would record no matter what,when i hit record the audio thats forming is blank,so i got a brand new mycrophone but it still doesnt record,and u know when u click record that green wave keeps movin from high to low dependin on your voice,etc,well that wave doesnt appear no more,what should i do????
